Nature's Kidneys
Lafarge is supplying 17,500 tonnes of aggregates from its quarries at Tyttenhanger, near St Albans, and Pashanger, near Hatfield, to an innovative water purification project in Berkhamsted.
Thames Water, in partneship with Black and Veatch, ARM Ltd and Eco~tech Systems, is constructing ten new reed beds —the second largest in the country — which will provide a low power waste water treatment system designed to reduce pollution levels. Reed beds use biological, chemical and physical removal mechanisms to treat waste water by filtering out solids and by using bacteria before being discharged into the watercourse.
