Dufftown Reed Beds

Eco∼tech Systems were awarded a Contract to construct two Reed Beds, designed primarily to assist with the removal of copper from distillery effluent in Dufftown.

Due to the restricted locations to site the scheme, the existing site storage requirements and the need to complete the works without disruption to the production process, the scheme was split into a number of phases:

The initial phase involved detailed and extensive ground investigation works, which resulted in the production of comprehensive plans detailing the location of all existing utilities and effluent pumping mains.

Phase two involved the careful excavation and re-location of existing services, removal of redundant pipework and the installation of new stainless steel effluent transfer lines and diversion and extension of the site’s main fire fighting mains water supply.

The third phase concentrated on the construction of the Reed Beds in Dufftown, the installation of a new access road for use by the emergency services. In conjunction with the removal of the excess site won material; this was utilised to create natu- rally shaped, self seeded bunds to screen additional areas of the works.

Works undertaken included the installation of the robust geomembrane lining system, collection and distribution pipework and flow control features including weir plates, stilling plates and flow-control features. A number of brick built and reinforced concrete chambers were constructed to control and direct flows and to allow access to flow control valves. Plant and labour were utilised effectively to place some 2,500 tonnes of specially sourced aggregates over the collection pipework located on the basal profile, with the aggregate placement being levelled using the latest laser guided precision instrumentation.

Qualified Banksman were deployed for the duration of the works to enforce stringent aggregate delivery procedures, ensuring vehicles were controlled during reversing and tipping. A stone dressing system was applied to the batter profiles to protect the lining system and breather pipe network; works were completed with the installation of timber edgings and top soiling and seeding works together, with other landscaping features. Eco∼tech Systems completed the works on a fully operational site, liaising throughout the Contract with the Diageo Site and Operations Managers from the distillery and other relevant Project Managers, ensuring that minimal disruption was caused to the facility during the Contract. All site works were completed to programme and without incident.
